Frequently Asked Questions

First, check that StarWhisper has microphone permission in Windows:

  • Open Windows Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone
  • Ensure "Let apps access your microphone" is turned On
  • Scroll down and confirm StarWhisper (or Desktop apps) is allowed

If the mic is detected but not recording: click the mic selector in the StarWhisper overlay to choose the correct input device. If you recently connected a headset, restart StarWhisper so it can re-enumerate devices.

Still not working? Email us at [email protected] with the model of your microphone and your Windows version.

StarWhisper automatically uses GPU acceleration when a compatible NVIDIA GPU is available. To verify it's active:

  • Open the StarWhisper settings panel
  • Look for Transcription Engine — it will show "GPU (CUDA)" if your graphics card is being used
  • If it shows "CPU only", make sure your NVIDIA drivers are up to date (version 525+)

GPU acceleration requires an NVIDIA GPU with CUDA support (GTX 10 series or newer). AMD and Intel GPUs run in CPU mode, which is still fast for short recordings.

Yes — StarWhisper is designed to work fully offline. All transcription runs locally on your device using Whisper AI models that are downloaded during first setup.

Internet is only required for:

  • Initial model download (done once during setup)
  • License verification when you first activate Pro
  • Optional cloud fallback transcription (if you have enabled it in settings)

Once your models are downloaded and your license is cached, StarWhisper will continue to work during network outages for up to 30 days without checking in.

The free tier gives you 500 words per day — great for occasional use. Transcription quality and offline usage are identical to Pro.

Pro ($10/month or $80/year) removes all word limits so you can transcribe as much as you want, plus you get priority support.

To upgrade or manage your subscription, click Upgrade in the StarWhisper overlay or visit starwhisper.ai/pro.

StarWhisper supports global hotkeys that work system-wide, even when StarWhisper is in the background:

  • Open the StarWhisper settings (gear icon in the overlay)
  • Go to Hotkeys
  • Click the key field next to "Start/Stop Recording" and press your desired key combination (e.g. Ctrl+Shift+Space)
  • Click Save

You can also use Hold-to-Talk mode: hold your hotkey while speaking and release when done — StarWhisper will automatically stop and transcribe. Enable this in Settings → Hotkeys → Hold-to-Talk mode.

If your hotkey conflicts with another application, try a different combination. Common safe choices: Ctrl+Shift+Space, Alt+`, or Ctrl+Alt+R.
