How StarWhisper Works

StarWhisper uses OpenAI's Whisper speech recognition model, trained on 680,000 hours of multilingual audio. The model runs locally using whisper.cpp, an optimized implementation for desktop use.

Choose from multiple model sizes based on your accuracy needs and hardware:

  • Tiny/Base: Fast transcription on very low-end hardware.
  • Small (recommended default): Best balance for everyday dictation. Runs on any modern PC and is the model most users should pick.
  • Medium: Useful for long-form audio or non-Latin scripts (CJK, Arabic, Cyrillic). Can over-correct short dictation clips.
  • Large-v3: Reserved for batch transcription of long files where the extra compute is worth it. Not recommended for short, real-time dictation, where it tends to hallucinate more than small.
