Use Whisper dictation in supported Windows text fields without Python or a command line. Choose a local model, check your microphone, then try one short sentence in Notepad. Start recording, speak, and stop to transcribe and insert the text. Pro also includes file transcription.
Workflow illustration, not a live transcript preview.
The installed Windows app has a simple three-step path. It does not promise instant text in every app: processing time and insertion behavior depend on the selected model, hardware, and target text field.
Want to try speech recognition before installing? Try the browser demo. It uses the browser Web Speech API and may require internet access; it is separate from the installed app's local whisper.cpp workflow.
For recorded product footage, watch the Windows dictation walkthrough. To inspect timings rather than a marketing speed claim, see the six-clip test lab with audio, raw results and a runnable script.
This is StarWhisper's official website and download source. StarWhisper is an independent application, not an official OpenAI product.
WhisperDesktop by Const-me is a separate open-source Windows application. If you are looking for WhisperDesktop.exe, use the official Const-me/Whisper repository and its Releases section. That project offers file and microphone transcription and uses DirectCompute for GPU processing. StarWhisper is not its official website or distributor.
StarWhisper is the app offered on this page. Choose it if you want a floating recording widget, a configurable hotkey, and insertion into supported Windows text fields. It uses whisper.cpp for local transcription and manages model downloads in Settings. Free includes Tiny, Base, and Small, with 2,000 words per week. Pro is $10/month or $80/year and adds larger models and file transcription.
Prefer scripts or a command line? Use the upstream whisper.cpp project. The shared Whisper model family does not make these applications interchangeable: setup, GPU support, recording controls, and output can differ.
Start with your own microphone, language, hardware, and the application you want to dictate into. These checks help you decide whether StarWhisper fits your workflow:
Select your microphone and check its level before recording. In standard dictation, StarWhisper captures your speech, then transcribes after you stop. Test a short sentence in Notepad before moving to your usual editor. Check the inserted result rather than relying on an optional preview.
When a compatible GPU path is available, StarWhisper can use it for inference. CUDA and optional Vulkan support are detected and configured by the app when the required driver path works; otherwise it falls back to CPU. Actual speed depends on the model, hardware, drivers, audio, and settings.
Whisper has supported model sizes from tiny to large. A desktop app needs to make model selection understandable to non-technical users, handle model downloads reliably, and let users switch between models without command-line incantations.
Whisper outputs text to a file or stdout. A desktop app can inject that text into common Windows text fields, such as email clients, document editors, browsers, and IDEs, without requiring the user to copy and paste. This requires Windows input integration.
For saved recordings, StarWhisper Pro has a Files panel in Settings. Check that your format is supported and that FFmpeg is available for video conversion. Subtitle downloads appear when the completed result includes subtitle output.
A Whisper desktop app should default to local processing. Cloud fallbacks that silently upload audio when the local model is "too slow" or introduce telemetry that captures transcription content undermine the core value proposition of running Whisper locally.
StarWhisper uses whisper.cpp rather than the official Python Whisper implementation. whisper.cpp is a C++ implementation of Whisper that does not require a Python runtime. The app bundles the components needed for its Windows workflow, so users do not need separate Python, pip, or command-line setup.
whisper.cpp uses the same Whisper model families as the Python implementation and is designed for local inference. Runtime performance and memory use depend on the selected model, hardware, drivers, and backend.
StarWhisper's floating widget stays available above your Windows workspace. Start recording with the widget or your configured hotkey, speak, then stop recording. The app processes the captured audio and can insert the finished transcript at the cursor in a supported text field. The standard widget indicates recording and processing status. Optional inline preview depends on your settings and the local transcription path; it does not guarantee instant text insertion.
This is designed for common Windows workflows such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, Gmail in Chrome, VS Code, Slack, Notion, and other text fields. The text injection uses standard Windows input simulation, with behavior depending on the target application and control.
StarWhisper can use NVIDIA CUDA when a compatible GPU and driver path are available. The app also has an optional Vulkan path for supported NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel hardware when its probe succeeds. If no GPU backend is available, it falls back to CPU inference. The app's Settings guidance is the right place to choose a model for your hardware; actual speed varies by model, hardware, drivers, audio, and settings.
The Free tier includes the Tiny, Base, and Small models. Pro unlocks the larger medium, large-v3-turbo, and large models. Each model has a different accuracy, memory, and speed trade-off. The model selector shows file size and guidance so you can choose a model for your hardware.
The Pro file transcription panel accepts audio such as MP3, WAV, FLAC, and OGG, plus video such as MP4, MKV, AVI, MOV, and WEBM with FFmpeg available. Choose a file in Settings > Files and follow its progress. Completed transcripts can be downloaded as text, with SRT and VTT downloads available when subtitle output was generated.

The original Python Whisper CLI suits scripted file transcription. StarWhisper adds a Windows interface and dictation controls around whisper.cpp. They use the same model family, not an identical application or processing pipeline. Compare a short recording with your chosen settings before relying on either output.
StarWhisper is purpose-built for this. Single installer, no Python, no CLI, system tray integration, a global hotkey for supported Windows text fields, and GPU acceleration configured when supported. Download, install, and choose a model in Settings before your first transcription. The local mode keeps selected transcription on your device after the model download.
Use StarWhisper Pro with the large-v3-turbo or large model when your hardware can handle it. Larger models can produce strong results on clean audio, depending on microphone quality, speaker, language, background noise, hardware, and settings. The Pro subscription unlocks the larger models at $10/month or $80/year. See the speech to text software comparison for how this stacks up against alternatives.
StarWhisper works on CPU-only hardware. Start with Tiny or Base on a CPU-only machine, then use the Settings guidance to decide whether Small or a larger model fits your hardware. Larger models may take longer on CPU, especially for long recordings.
Choose a multilingual model and select your spoken language in Settings, or use auto-detect. Test your own language and accent: support does not guarantee the same accuracy across languages. See the multilingual speech to text guide for setup guidance.
Start with a microphone check and one short dictation:
Whisper desktop app for Windows: no Python or CLI. Set up your microphone and model, then try a short dictation.
Download StarWhisperLarger models need more memory and may be slow on CPU-only hardware. Start with Tiny, Base, or Small, then check Settings guidance before downloading a larger model. NVIDIA CUDA and optional Vulkan acceleration can help when the required hardware and driver path are available; otherwise CPU fallback remains supported.
After a Pro file transcription completes, look for the SRT or VTT download beside its saved result. These buttons appear when subtitle output is available. Import the subtitle file into your editor and review its wording and timing before publishing.
The hotkey you configure for toggling dictation on and off determines how much friction the Whisper desktop app adds to your workflow. A hotkey that requires significant hand movement or conflicts with common shortcuts will reduce how often you use it. Spend a few minutes finding a hotkey combination that is accessible from your normal hand position at the keyboard. Single function keys (F9-F12) or uncommon modifier combinations (Ctrl+Alt+Space) work well for most users.
StarWhisper uses the same Whisper model families. Output quality depends on the selected model, audio quality, speaker, language, and background noise. Runtime performance and memory use depend on the selected engine, model, hardware, drivers, and settings.
No. StarWhisper is built on whisper.cpp and does not require Python, pip, or a development environment. Setup can still require microphone permissions, working drivers and a model download.
StarWhisper supports NVIDIA GPUs with CUDA when the required driver path is available. It also has an optional Vulkan path for supported NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel hardware when its probe succeeds. If no GPU backend is available, the app falls back to CPU inference. Check Settings for the model guidance on your hardware.
Local mode processes transcription on your device after the model download, so that mode does not need internet connectivity for transcription. Pro also includes optional OpenAI API access, which is a cloud path. Pro license validation may require periodic check-in. See the offline speech to text guide for details.
StarWhisper supports Tiny, Base, and Small in Free. Pro adds Medium, Large-v3-Turbo, and Large. Model downloads happen through the Settings panel with progress indication.
The OpenAI Whisper API sends your audio to OpenAI's cloud servers and charges per minute. StarWhisper can process audio locally with no audio transmitted for local workflows. Quality depends on the selected model and audio conditions, while privacy, pricing, and offline characteristics are fundamentally different. For high-volume use, local processing can also be cheaper than API usage.
No Python. No CLI. GPU acceleration configured when supported. Dictate into supported Windows text fields with StarWhisper.
